Love On The Rocks

Who doesn't like a good Neil Diamond cover? One of my personal favorites, as done here by Jonathan Davis of Korn. It's the genre bending covers that do it for me sometimes.

Candy

Still don't remember Mandy Moore from yesterday's post? Maybe this cover of Candy by Slick Shoes will help ring a bell. It's the 2002 cover album Punk Goes Pop, a must buy for the Cover Lover.

Lead singer of Slick Shoes has a slight Ozzy sound to him, doesn't he?

Umbrella

I've been hitting the cover bottle kinda heavy lately, so I'll take it a bit lighter today.

Mandy Moore has led an interesting career. Originally a lesser version of Brittney Spears, cranking out bubble gum crap like Candy. She almost immediately claimed that wasn't her, and she'd been horribly mis-type cast. To prove her individuality she recorded an album of covers called Coverage. This Rhianna cover wasn't on that album, but heck if you haven't done a Bob Dylan cover, you've done a Rhianna cover ...

Also she became an actor, did some shitty movies like Chasing Liberty, How to Deal and Generic Pseudo-Girl Power Movie with Mild Parental Angst Due To Their Slightly Mixed Feelings About the Boy Who Wants to Take My Virginity in a Completely Non-Threatening Way #7. Didn't catch that one? I think it went straight to video.

I Don't Care Anymore [Kelis / Phil Collins]

I've features some ... unlikely covers in this here blog. This unlikely cover comes from an unlikely tribute album. Urban Renewal - A Hip Hop Tribute to .... Phil Collins?!? And it's not just a bunch of people rapping over that drum part from In The Air Tonight? ODB, Montel Jordon, Brandy and of course Ms. Milkshake herself, Kelis.

My cover brings all the boys to the yard ... ?

Cry Me A River [Lost Prophets / Justin Timberlake]

Sometime lost in the syrupy sap of bubble gum pop, is the angry anger of teen angst and a broken heart. To bring that out some times it takes a really heavy cover. This cover of Justin Timberlake by the Lost Prophets makes me want to mosh, or whatever the kids are doing these days? Are they still moshing? I can't stay up on these things anymore. I'm 32 for christsake.

Land of 1000 Dances [Crappy Cover]

For every good cover, there are 100 that suck, or in today's case 1000. I feel it's by job ... nay my duty to bring you some of these crappy covers from time to time because in the words of the great American philosophers Beavis and Butthead, "If it didn't have a part that sucked, then it's like, the other part wouldn't be as cool."

So in what can only be described as a true taste of 1985, here's the Wrestlers of the WWF (now WWE) covering Wilson Pickett's Land of 1000 Dances. Mr. Pickett is no doubt spinning in his grave. I don't even know for sure that he's dead, but I stand by my statement either way. Sadly Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant weren't involved in this song.

It's actually kind of surprising in a few ways ...

1) The Mouth of The South, Jimmy Hart can actually sing.
2) I can name all but one of the wrestlers, 90% of the ones that are still alive are still making a living wrestling. The notable exception is Jessie Ventura.
3) Yes, that is MeatLoaf on drums ... who knew he could play drums? Obviously Cyndi Lauper was much more successful with her Rock and Wrestling Connection perhaps because she was smart enough to hide behind a wig and glasses for this video.
4) Where the hell's the Honky Tonk Man? I mean ... com'on, this was made for him! (He actually made his debut in 1986, but still ... )

Toxic [Cover to Cover]

It's time for another Cover to Cover"Cover to Cover" is just that. Two (or more) cover versions of the same song, in one post. So that you can compare and contrast the similarities and differences in a three page essay.

Taking on Britney Spears' Toxic are two different groups. The lighter side is the Chapin Sisters. Best known for being the daughters of Harry Chapin who aren't Mary Chapin Carpenter, the girls have a light airy accoustic ballad-y take on the song.

On the other side of the coin is Static Lullaby, from the Punk Goes Pop 2 CD. A heavy heavy version with toxic vocals. Awesome.

And how fucking dare any of you make fun of Britney! Leave Britney Alone! Please! *sob*

Video Killed the Radio Star [Presidential Covers]

Rounding out my list of Presidental Covers, on Presidents' Day no less, is the band called Presidents Of The United States Of America covering the Buggles. Here's an obscure fact that every single person on the planet know. Video Killed The Radio Star was the first video ever played on MTV. Back when they still played music videos.

Rocket Man [Presidental Covers]

Here's a flash back. Obscure 90's band, The Nixons, covering the Elton John classic Rocket Man. Yeah, I know it's a stretch to call The Nixons presidential ... wait ... Nixon really was a president? It's not just something they made up for Futurama? Who'd of thunk it?
