Hallelujah [Deep Cover / Cover to Cover]

You may be suprized to know that Hallelujah was originally recorded by Leonard Cohen. There have been so many other people to cover the song, that "owned" it, which is why today's entry is both a deep cover and a cover to cover.

According to http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/ there are 2,040 covers of Hallelujah. I think they count all 200 versions by American Idol contestants as one though so there might be more.

Jeff Buckley's cover is often mistaken for the original.

Rufus Wainwright's is perhaps the best known, having been featured in Shrek.

KD Lang did a version at the last winter Olympics

Allison Crowe is one of my top ten Hallelujah covers for sure.

Bon Jovi does a version too. Not great, but a little more rockin'

Il Divo sings it in Italian, making it sound all operatic. Thanks Simon Cowell!

If you're tired of the piano versions, try this one by Imogen Heap.

If you want to hear a god awful, techno spoken word version of this song, try Bono. Wait, what?

View To A Kill

View to a Kill was written for the Bond movie of the same name by Duran Duran. As you may remember that was the film where bond was played by Buddy Hackett. Here's the Lost Prophets' cover.

Poker Face [Daughtry/Lady GaGa]

Here is American Idol's most famous reject, Chris Daughtry covering Lady GaGa. Really, what more do you need to know?

I've Gotta Get A Message To You

For most people born after 1978, the Bee Gees have been, and will always be the embodiment of Disco. What often over looked is they were, pre-disco a pretty tight vocal group. From those early days comes I've Gotta Get a Message To You covered here by Moxy Fruvous.

It's All Coming Back To Me Now [Deep Cover]

Pop quiz hot shot ... "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" was written by long time Marvin Lee Aday (Mr. Loaf to some) collaborator Jim Steinman. But who first recorded it?

A) Meat Loaf
-or-
B) Celine Dion

According to legend, in 1986, the song was written and intended for the album Bat Out Of Hell 2. However Steinman threw a hissy fit claiming it could only be sung by a woman, sued Meat Loaf. Thus allowing Ms. Dion the opportunity to record it before Meat Loaf. So as you might have guessed, the original version was recorded by the girl group Pandora's Box. Thus making both well known versions of the song, Deep Covers. I prefer meat myself.

Get Out of My Dreams (Get Into My Car)

Oh Billy, after the Indian and the Pacific, you're my favorite Ocean.

From the "NASCAR on Fox" Soundtrack ... Huh? ... here's Fenix TX covering Get Out Of My Dreams (Get Into My Car).

Dancing Days

Dancing Days are here again. This time covered by Stone Temple Pilots. I for one think Led Zeppelin would be proud of them if they were alive today. Wait they are? Huh ...

Me And Bobby McGee [Deep Cover]

While this song is pretty much Janis Joplin's signature song, yes, it's a Deep Cover. Originally written by Kris Kristofferson and originally recorded by Rodger Miller (Who?). Yes, Bobbi had a sex change and became Bobby for Janis. The song was actually covered by Kenny Rogers, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Haley and The Comets, Sam Sham and the Pharaohs and Jerry Lee Lewis before Ms. Joplin ever got her mitts on it.

It's been covered by like a million other people since then as well, including a surprisingly good take by Jennifer Love Hewitt. Let's face it, this song is like the town floozy. Everyone takes a turn at it, but everyone only talks about the one who did it best.

Firework

I worry about Katy Perry. She has projectiles from her mommy melons way too often. Perhaps if she heard this R&B take on Firework by Ahmir she'd call down a bit and stop shooting things from her nipples. Then again maybe not.

Need You Now

Okay, I'll admit that I'm not a fan of country pop. But some how I like this Lady Antebellum song. I love however this soulful R&B take by Ahmir of "I Need You Now." It makes me feel kinda funny, like when I used to climb the rope in gym class.

Rock and Roll All Night

Here's a cover genre I'm going to bet you've never heard of before. It's called dictionaraoke.
"This site features parodies of popular songs using karaoke-style backing music with vocals provided by audio pronunciation samples from online dictionaries." So it's 100% electronic, especially the vocals. There's a 100 or so of these, all free for the downloading. Interesting, if not good. Here's a cover by Ball2000 doing Kiss. You wanted the best, you got something else entirely!

Girl You Want

In 1985 Emmett Brown asked "Why are things so heavy in the future?" Why? Because in the future SoundGarden will cover Devo, that's why!
