Train covering Rhianna's "Umbrella." God, is there anyone who hasn't covered this song. Besides Ella Fitzgerald? That's right. I said Ella ... Ella ... Ella.
If nothing else Lady Antebellum has given karaoke singers another song to duet on, so you're no longer just stuck with "Photograph" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow or some crap from Official Grease Movie.
Here's Boyce Avenue and Savannah Outen.
Does it bother anyone else when a musician writes a song about another musician? It's like ... I don't have enough musical talent by myself, but maybe I can trick you into thinking I have more by singing about someone who does.
Then again ... I'm running a cover song blog, so what the hell do I have to talk about?
One of my joys with UnderCover with Crut (The Cover Song Blog) is that every next big act uses the cover song as a stepping stone to bigger things ... the tribute album in particular. I was turned into bands like Blink 182 and Dashboard Confessional years before most were (both those bands were on the 1997 Before You Were Punk album).
Anyway three years ago I posted a cover by a band I totally stumbled into on YouTube. The band is called Ahmir and tonight they get their big break on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon performing an original song. I can't help but be a wee bit proud.
Before they do though, here's my last chance to claim them as my discovery, as they cover B.o.B's Airplanes.
Normally, I try to only post covers done by musicians. Not just some guy with a YouTube channel. However this cover of David Bowie's Space Oddity was recorded on the International Space Station by Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield.
I'm impressed, but I'm going to wait for the follow up Bowie cover, Life on Mars.
Okay, I definitely have a man crush on Alex Goot. His ability to turn mindless bubble gum pop into catchy lil' ditties has won him my accolades before, but his take on hair metal standard, Bon Jovi's Livin' on Prayer is kinda mind blowing.
Blah blah blah Pentatonix is awesome acapella music. There I said it. Now I have no idea who Lindsey Stirling is, but I would totally hit that with a sledge hammer. I've always had a thing for chicks who play electric violin since I saw that chick in the top hat and purple coat playing for Tony Tone Toni on Saturday Night Live in like 1994. Someone out there knows what I'm talking about and they totally agree.
