Gangsta's Paradise

Nothing is as gangsta as playing the toy Xylophone. Wait ... What the hell was Alyson Greenfield thinking when she covered Coolio

I Know

I'd never heard the original of this song until the cover. I like it lots. I like Elvis Costello lots too. I also like Fiona Apple, especially when she's singing in her underwear how she's "been a bad, bad girl." Anyway, I need to go take a cold shower.

Our World

There's a whole Muppets tribute album coming out this year! Yessss! That's even better than getting a hummer in a movie theater while watching a Muppet Treasure Island. On second thought ... no. It's not that good. I mean ... I'm guessing. I really don't know. I mean ... Here's My Morning Jacket.

Welcome to the Jungle

"I wanna hear you .... sreeeeeeeam!" No? Okay how about then an instrumental version of GNR by 2Chellos. You might have guessed 2Chellos is a group consisting of 2 guys playing chellos. Think Apocalyptica, but half the band.

Last Friday Night (TGIF)

So the cover version of Katy Perry's Last Friday Night (TGIF) by Alex Goot lacks Corey Feldman and Debbie Gibson. But on the plus side it also lacks Rebecca Black and Kenny G. Also it's really good.

Everywhere

I was driving home the other day and I saw a billboard that read "Get VD." It was of course a billboard for the television show Vampire Diaries. But ... talk about poor word choice.

Not to mention that has nothing to do with this cover of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere by Vampire Weekend.

Du Hast

Wow. It's not every day you hear a cover of Rammstein. In fact, I've never heard one. And this one by Viva Vox Choir is acapella. Just wow. To quote one youtube commenter "This is the greatest thing ever made. I'm going to make babies to this song and name them all after members of this choir."

Never Tear Us Apart

True this cover lacks the dripping sexuality of the original INXS version, but COM'ON! It's Me First and The Gimmie Gimmie who in my book can do no wrong.

You Oughta Know

The year was 1995. My first memory of hearing a song and knowing it was a cover and thinking it was totally smothered in awesome sauce. Here's 1000 Mona Lisas covering the song that founded the genre of music known as "Angry Cooter Music", You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette

TubThumping

For a brief ... very, very brief time, Chumbawumba was the shiznit. We all though that TubThumping was a drinking song for the ages. How very, very wrong we were. They release a second album that they encouraged their fans to not purchase, but instead to steal. Which not only came off as pretentious, but also turned out to be a poor business model.

Thanks to the Onion's A.V. club, and They Might Be Giants, all the magic has been shoved back into the song. It almost makes me remember why America fell in love with the song in the first place ... almost.

They Might Be Giants covers Chumbawamba

Common People

Are you sure you want to listen to a cover of common people /  you want to hear Shatner, common people sing / you want to cover Pulp's common people

Some people give Shatner shit for his terrible singing, but I for one think this song is the bomb, and not just because of the Ben Folds musical arrangements.

This Land Is Your Land

If you're like me, you had to sing this song at summer camp so many times as a child, you have no idea it was ever a song that got played on the radio, let alone a protest song. Originally a Woody Guthrie song, here's Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings taking a folk song straight into the heart of the motown sound.

Grenade

Some day Alex Goot is going to be big. Then you can thank me. Until then enjoy this Bruno Mars cover.

I Drove All Night [Deep Cover]

Originally recorded by Roy Orbison, I Drove All Night was a hit for Cyndi Lauper. Most people fail to realize this, which is why it counts as a Deep Cover. I think both versions are much sexier than Celine Dion's though.
