Blinded By The Light, manfred mann's earth band, Bruce Springsteen, tony danza, cover, cover song, deep cover

Blinded by the Light [Manfred Mann’s Earth Band / Bruce Springsteen] DEEP COVER From the Vault February 23, 2012 Most people know “Blinded By The Light" as the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band version of the song, which makes it a Deep Cover. The original of the song was done by The Boss, Tony Danza. Er… I mean Bruce Springsteen. You can see how I get those two confused? Anyway it was the first single off the “Greetings From Ashbury Park" album and failed to chart. It wasn’t until later when, to paraphrase Springsteen, Mann rewrote the song to be about a feminine hygiene product that the song charted. There don’t you feel smarter for knowing that?

billie jean, the civil wars, michael jackson, cover, Cover Song, Foghat

Billie Jean [The Civil Wars / Michael Jackson] From the Vault … May 23, 2012 The Civil Wars are the other duo with a member last named White with terrible hair and early 80’s porn star ‘stache. They are not married and they are not brother or sister. As far as I can tell they’re not siblings married to each other either. They’re a country group, I felt mentioning that last part was important. Here they are covering the King Of Pop … and Foghat.

Alana Davis, Ani DiFranco, 32 Flavors, Cover Song, deep cover, Baskin Robbins, Ice Cream

32 Flavors [ Alana Davis / Ani DiFranco] DEEP COVER Normally I save the “Deep Cover" hashtag for covers that the cover version is way more famous than the original version. And while the cover version did get significantly more air play than the DiFranco original … it was just another song in the sea of late 90’s angry cooter music. Also not to disappoint anyone but this song is not about Ice Cream. Doh!

Rumor Has It, Ahmir, Adele, Heard it through the grapevine, CCr, Cover, coversong

Rumor Has It [Ahmir / Adele ] I (heart) this group. Ahmir just does the throw back motown vibe so well, but then to cover a song that sounds like a throw back and mash it with Grapevine. Why that’s just awesomesauce.

Creep, homeless mustard, Radiohead, opie and anthony, Cover, cover song

Creep [Daniel “Homeless" Mustard / Radiohead] Some songs take on entirely different meanings just by knowing the history of the singer. Daniel “Homeless" Mustard was a homeless ex-con when he lucked into playing a cover of Radiohead’s Creep on the Opie and Anthony Show. Now he’s got a record contract and the homeless thing is a gimmick. Anyway, a broken hearted creep is different than a homeless creep. No?

Smooth, Escape the Fate, Santana, Cover Song, Cover, statler and waldorf

Smooth [Escape The Fate / Santana] I’ll be honest … it’s hard to change genres when covering a song titled “Smooth." Escape the Fate doesn’t do a half bad job though, it’s not half good either. Thank you Statler and Waldorf.

Lateralus, Break Of Reality, tool, 2cellos, Apocalyptica, cover, cover songs

Lateralus [Break of Reality / Tool] Break of Reality is described as “Heavy Cello Thunder" which is very. very frightening to me … and Galileo. Anyway Break of Reality is differs from the group 2Cellos because there’s four cellos, and they differ from Apocalyptica because of their cellists also plays percussion. So what I’m trying to say is metal and cellos are cool. Wait, is Tool metal? They’re kinda metal. The rest of this album is metal. I’m saying metal.

A-Team, chester see, ed sheeran, Cover, Cover song

A Team [Chester See / Ed Sheeran] Here’s a little known fact, if you have an earworm that you just can’t get out of your head, just listen to the theme song from the TV show “The A-Team." I have no idea why this works it just does. Sadly that A-Team has nothing to do with the recent hit song by Ed Sheeran, covered here by Chester See.

Well even if it wasn’t, here’s a band called Passion Pit covering the Smashing Pumpkins. Oh and just as a warning, this dude’s falsetto is like if Berry Gibb got kicked in the nuts by giraffe. Skanatra, Frank Sinatra, Fly me to the moon, Cover Cover song

Fly Me To The Moon [Skanatra / Frank Sinatra] From the vault … September 12, 2012 With in the world of of cover bands, there exists the tribute band. Tribute bands, unlike the straight up cover band, only does covers of songs by one artists. Sometimes the tribute bands are just straight up impersonators, but sometimes they put an awesome twist on the original artists and wind up with an awesome gimmick and band name. There’s Mini Kiss, who you might have seen in a Dr. Pepper commercial They’re a little person Kiss Tribute band. There’s Lez Zepplin, a tribute band whose members are all lesbians. There’s the Misfats, a heavyset Misfits knock off. Black Diamond is a great Neil Diamond impersonator, as long as you don’t look at his skin color. There’s MANdona, which has to be a favorite on the drag queen circuit. Today’s cover is by Skanatra, a ska group that you guessed it, covers the Old Blue Eyes in the Ska style. Neat!

Jonathan Coulton, Sir Mix A Lot, Baby got back, cover, Cover Song

Baby Got Back [Jonathan Coulton / Sir Mix A Lot] From the vault … June 18th 2012 You know what? I have to admit it. Every freaking time someone covers a rap song with Banjos, I think it’s like … an LA Face with an Oakland booty. So here’s internet nerd alt-folk TMBG opening act Jonathan Coulton covering Sir Mix A Lot.

Richard Cheese, Lounge against the Machine, Lady Gaga, cover, cover song

Just Dance [Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine / Lady Gaga] According to Wikipedia, “Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine specialize in playing lounge-style arrangements of recent popular rock, metal, rap and hip hop songs, sung in a croony traditional swing vocal style, contrasting an elegant jazz treatment of the music with often profane and ribald lyrics to create a humorous dissonance." What that means in plan ‘merican english, is that he does covers, in this case Lady Gaga’s Just Dance, in a lounge style, when makes it funny.
