All kidding aside, congrats to newly engaged front man Chad Kroeger on his impending nuptials to Avril Lavigne. They go together like Chocolate and Peanut Butter. If both Chocolate and Peanut Butter were both made of pure Canadian Evil. Avril, if you pull a Yoko Ono with Nickelback then I’ll be so …. actually that’s a pretty good plan. Let’s do that.

Here’s an interesting tidbit, Nena’s 99 Red Balloons was one of the of the first songs to name check a character from Star Trek, Captain Kirk. Here’s Goldfinger doing a cover, you’d think they might change Kirk to Picard, to make it more modern and relevant, but they didn’t.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band [ Bill Cosby / Beatles ] What the hell? I mean what the actual hell? People did a lot of drugs in the 60’s. Bill Cosby must have been like … freebasing Jello Pudding.
Fade Into You [ Catman Cohen / Mazzy Star ] Mazzy Star has gotta be the icon for 90’s one hit wonders. And since I know everyone was just dying to hear what the song would sound like if Cookie Monster sang it, Catman Cohen decided to answer that question for us, twenty years too late.
Surrender [ Velvet Revolver / Cheap Trick ] Mommy’s alright, Daddy’s alright, they just smoked a little weed.
Payphone [ Crown the Empire / Maroon 5 ] Take Maroon 5, subtract all the falsetto, add in some swearing, and basically that’s what you have here. Only it winds up sounding like your dad’s drunk and yelling at your mom, albeit in a very musical fashion,
You Shook Me All Night Long [ AC/DC / Hayseed Dixie ] If you have a bit of a southern twang, you might pronounce “AC/DC” like “Hayseed Dixie.” That’s not an accident. Bluegrass meets Aussie classic rock will leave you working double time on the seduction line.

Don’t You Want Me [ Atomic Tom / Human League ] From the vault … March 27, 2011 Normally I hide the videos, but this one is so fulled with creamy 80’s Nougat, I just had to. I’m sure the video is ten times more entertaining than the movie it comes from, Take Me Home Tonight. Did anyone actually see that movie? Anyway after seeing this video, as much as I hate Topher Grace, if they ever decide to remake Back To the Future, he’s allowed to be in it. Okay maybe not Back to the Future, but Teen Wolf. So here’s Atomic Tom covering the Human League.
Mother [ Wye Oak / Danzig ] A smart man would have posted this on Mother’s Day. Then again a smart man prolliy doesn’t waste his time posting cover songs on a blog.
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart [ Macy Gray & Old Dirty Bastard / Elton John & KiKi Dee ] I search the bowels of the music industry to find the most unique, the most delightful, and the best covers for ya’ll. Sometimes just to prove it, I like to share what I find at the bottom of the barrel. This Crappy Cover is terrible. It sounds like two congested Muppets slowly being run over by a car, while being raped by a humpback whale. It’s just awful.
Raspberry Beret [ Hindi Love Gods / Prince ] How about a drunken Warren Zevon teaming up with REM (minus Michael Stipe) to cover Prince?
Addicted To Love [ Neneh Cherry / Robert Palmer ] From the 1997 movie Addicted to Love here is Neneh Cherry’s version of Addicted to Love. As a rule of thumb, movies based on song titles usually only turn out slightly better than movies based on video games.
Material Girl [ Walk Off The Earth / Madonna ] I’m so glad Walk Off The Earth has become a big enough band that all 5 of them no longer have to all play the same guitar at once.
Got To Be Real [ Mary J. Blige & Will Smith / Cheryl Lynn ] From the Vault … Feb. 15th, 2012 In the wake of the success of “Finding Nemo” every animation studio tried to put out some fish based movie for the nearsighted grandma to buy for their grand kids. This brought us The Reef, Shark Tale and others. Shark Tale actually had some star power behind it, but was still basically a terrible movie. On the soundtrack however was Mary J. Blige and Will Smith covering “Got To Be Real.” Interesting side note, on the original Cheryl Lynn recording, the session guitarist was none other than Ray Parker Jr. So apparently he did do something other than rip off Huey Lewis.
Hard to Handle [ Black Crowes / Otis Redding ] From the Vault … June 8th, 2012 It’s amazing how many bands’ “signature” songs are actually covers. For example Aretha Franklin’s “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” was originally by Otis Redding. Today’s Deep Cover is also an Otis Redding original, covered here by the Black Crows, “Hard to Handle” originally recorded by Redding in 1968 reached #38 on the Billboard R&B charts and #51 on the pop charts. And you thought he was just the “Shitting on the Dock of The Bay” guy. Sitting! I meant Sitting!
Working Class Hero [ Green Day / John Lennon ] Apparently at the time the song was originally released by John Lennon it was very controversial because it contained the word “fuck.” Can you believe that shit?
Apologize [ Pixie Lott / One Republic ] One Republic made radio history when with its first single, “Apologize”, received the largest amount of airplay with 10,331 plays in one week, which is exactly the type of song you want to cover so that you can hear it … one … more … time.
Creep [ Korn / Radiohead ] I know I’ve featured a cover of this song before, it wasn’t perfect in my mind. Yeah … that’s all the vague referencing of the lyrics I can stand to hash up. But really if you’re going to cover Radiohead, is there another song you’re going to pick?
Fix You [ Street Corner Symphony / Coldplay ] From The Vault … May 6, 2012 I actually thought I posted this one many moons ago, because it’s one of two songs I’ve ever heard, cover or not, that has ever evoked genuine tears from me without other stimulus. And the richer the sound system I hear it on, the more likely I am to have that response again. Here’s Street Corner Symphony covering Coldplay.
