A hopeless place, what … like the back of a Volkswagen?
You’re The one That I Want [Lo-Fang / Olivia Newton John & John Travolta]
You tube has basicly harassed me into posting this cover by making it the ad I’ve been forced to view for the past month. Happy now YouTube?!?
Straight Outta Compton [Nina Gordon / N.W.A.]
From the Vault … January 5th, 2011
Nothing says “Gangsta” like the former lead singer of Veruca Salt, Nina Gordon on acoustic guitar covering N.W.A. biotches!
Boyz In The Hood [Dynamite Hack / N.W.A.]
From The Vault … January 5, 2011
Nothing says “Gangsta” like Dynamite Hack doing an accoustic cover of N.W.A. biotches!
Sometimes When We Touch [Manny Pacquiao / Dan Hill]
Happy Boxing Day ya’ll! Here’s boxer Manny Pacquiao singing!
Christmas At Ground Zero [Yulenog and Nathan Kuruna / “Weird Al” Yankovic] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
As per my tradition, for Christmas I fin d a cover you can download for FREE! It’s a like a present! Only more like a regifting!
Also if I get a single complaint about posting this song because of 9/11 I’m going to kick some ass.
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas [Local H / Judy Garland] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
Back when I did my radio show in college, on the college rock station, I totally played the shit out of this song in December, because it’s college rock.
Yule Shoot Your Eye Out [Skyway Traffic / Fallout Boy] 12 Days Of Covers
From the vault … December 25, 2012
Merry Xmas, I could care less.
Mind Games [Dan Bern / John Lennon] 8 COVERED NIGHTS
Musically, besides Covers, my favorite is Mr Dan Bern. So when another cover song blog features the cover songs of Dan Bern, I have to follow suit. Plus … JEW!
Mistletoe [Ahmir / Justin Bieber] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
On the 4th day of Christmas covers, my true love gave to me, a cover of Justin Beiber
The Sound Of Silence [The Amazing Rabbis / Simon and Garfunkel] 8 COVERED NIGHTS
Every yeah for Channukah, I highlight the music M.O.T.’s (Members of the Tribe for ye old gentiles). Mainly because there are only so many modern Hannukah songs to cover that aren’t by Adam Sandler. Here’s the Jew-yest. The Amazing Rabbi’s covering Simon and Garfunkel (both Jews).
I Want An Alien For Christmas [I Fight Dragons / Fountains Of Wayne] 12 Days Of Covers
From the vault … December 23, 2010
Let no one say I stuck with the standards for the Christmas Covers. Here covering Fountains Of Wayne, is I Fight Dragons.
Fat Bottomed Girls [The Band Perry / Queen]
Before you go dieting, just remember, they don’t write songs about girls will small athleticlly tones butts. I cannot lie. You other brothers can’t deny.
Price Tag [Little Big Town / Jessie J]
From Little Big Town’s very brief web series, Scattered Smoothed and Covered, here’s a very banjo-y cover of Jessie J’s Price tag, complete with onions melted cheese just like at the Waffle Hizzy.
Never Tear Us Apart [The Horrible Crowes / INXS]
The Horrible Crowes aren’t really horrible, they’re just slightly overrated.
If I Were A Boy [Beyonce / BC Jean] UNCOVERED
If I Were a Boy was a hit by Beyonce, but she didn’t write it. I’m sure that didn’t suprize anyone, why may surprize you is that the song was originally released by singer/songwriter BC Jean. Here’s that Uncovered version.
Sleigh Ride [Los Straightjackets / Boston Pops] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
From the vault … December 22, 2010
Here’s the luchadore mask wearing, surf-abilly playing hipsters, Los Straightjackets, covering a tune first recorded by the Boston Pops.
Save The Best For Last [Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies / Vanessa Williams]
It’s the first Friday of the month, that means it’s Me First Friday! Yay!
Hey, remember how scandalous it was that Vanessa Williams appeared in Playboy? Yeah … now we have Kardashian Ass everywhere.
In A Little While [Hanson / U2]
You know U2 really doesn’t make a bad song, and it’s kinda hard to improve on the original. But here Hanson kinda sorta does … nope. 1997 me would kick 2014 me’s ass if I actually broke down and said something nice about Hanson.
Holiday Road [Walkmen / Lindsey Buckingham] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
From the Vault … December 14, 2010
Sure I could do a whole month of Christmas Covers. In fact I could do a whole year of Christmas covers, but around July it might get old. So instead here’s the 12 Days of Covers. We’ll get it started with this one via the Onion A.V. Club, it’s the Walkmen covering Lindsey Buckingham’s Holiday Road. I suppose this isn’t technically a Christmas song, but it appeared in Christmas Vacation, so close enough.
Stay [Rebecca Black and Dave Days / Rihanna]
Welcome to the Second Annual Day After Thanksgiving Rebecca Black Friday here on Undercover With Crut! Why do I do this? Because I can’t resist the pun!
To finish out the day, here’s Rebecca Black herself covering Rihanna, and it’s surprisingly not sucky.
Look stilrzgirl… They’re playing our song!
Friday [Crash City / Rebecca Black] COVER TO COVER
Welcome to the Second Annual Day After Thanksgiving Rebecca Black Friday here on Undercover With Crut! Why do I do this? Because I can’t resist the pun!
With a folksy take on the song, here is Crash City.
Friday [Katy Perry / Rebecca Black]
From the Vault … May 15, 2011
Oh dear god, Katy Perry, who knew you could sink so low? Actually I’m guessing that it’s done tongue in cheek since she has to count the number of “fun’s” on her fingers.
American Pie [Madonna / Don McLean] CRAPPY COVER
Every year on Thanksgiving I try to honor the holiday by giving ya’ll a big old turkey. And this one is just awful. I don’t know who thought this was good idea, but Madge thought turning one of the greatest songs of the modern era into a medicore dance hall track was a good idea. Ugh!
99 Red Balloons [Andrew Huang / Nena]
Not to state the obvious here, but it’s 99 Red Balloons, played on instead of musical instruments it’s played on a slightly less quantity of red balloons.
If You Could Only See [Boyce Avenue / Tonic]
From the Vault … May 18, 2011
I love Tonic. In my book one of the most underrated bands in the Alt-Rock era. I know, you’ll question my entire musical taste from now on but … I still think they’re awesome. Here’s Boyce Avenue covering one of thier best known songs.
Smooth Criminal [Alien Ant Farm / Micheal Jackson]
From the vault … November 27th, 2010
Until they covered Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal in 2001, no one had heard of Alien Ant Farm. But thanks to a video that was equal parts loving tribute and scathing parody of the gloved one, for a brief moment they were totally unstoppable. Then without warning they disappeared. I somehow blame 9/11. Gone but not forgotten, at Jackson’s funeral last year they were asked to “please move out of the way, we’re trying to get through.”
Not Over You [Parachute / Gavin Degraw]
Remember in gym class in elementary school when you played with the parachute and then everyone would sit under it. Yeah, that was cool.
West End Girls & People Who Died [Gwar / Pet Shop Boys & Jim Carroll]
Okay, I admit, I kinda have a thing for the new chick in Gwar. yeah, I know her stage name is Vulvatron.
Mandy [Barry Manilow / Scott English] DEEP COVER
From the vault … March 3, 2011
It’s been a while since I’ve gone all DEEP COVER on you, so let’s do it now shall we?
For those of you who failed to take notes last time, a Deep Cover is a cover song that has eclipsed the original version of the song in famousness. Is that a word? Famousness? Anyway often times in the case of a Deep Cover the original version is practically forgotten about.
That’s certainly the case of the Scott English song “Brandy.” Never heard of it right? The original Scott English cover was an upbeat bubble gum pop tune, the cover was a sad somber song which Clive Davis suggested a small lyrical change too. And the rest as they say is musical history.
Oh, yeah I almost forgot, that small lyrical change, Brandy became Mandy, and Barry Manilow had his first hit single. The true test between a Cover Lover and just someone who just is mildly interested in covers is their knowledge, or lack there of that bit of trivia.
Also worth noting before becoming a singer, Barry Manilow did jingles. He wrote the “I’m Stuck On Band Aid” and “Like a Good Neighbor” jingle and did the vocals for Mickey D’s “You deserve a Break Today” campaign. Yeah,
I fucking love Barry Manilow. My guilty pleasure.
Tainted Love [Soft Cell / Gloria Jones] DEEP COVER
From the Vault … April 10, 2011
Yes, Tainted Love is a very DEEP COVER. Best known as the signature song of Soft Cell in the 1980’s, it was originally recorded by Motown singer Gloria Jones in 1964 and failed to chart in the both the US and UK. Listening to the original it sounds more akin to “I Will Survive” than the Soft Cell version of the same song. Even the trademark “BUM BUM” is barely noticeable.
I Swear [All 4 One / John Michael Montgomery] DEEP COVER
In the early 90’s R&B scene if Boyz II Men were the Beatles, and Color Me Badd were the Rolling Stones then All 4 One was without a doubt Strawberry Alarm Clock. What you didn’t know was that their big hit was a cover of country crooner John Michael Montgomery,
Don’t Cha [Pussycat Dolls / Tori Alamaze] DEEP COVER
Never heard the original of “Don’t Cha?” Don’t worry no one else did either. Former Outkast backup singer Tori Alamaze recorded the song in in 2004 and then was promptly dropped by the label. A brief attempt was made to talk Paris Hilton into recording the song, before the Pussycat Dolls got their hands on it. It sounds basically the same as the original but sluttier and Busta Rhymesier.
Dynamite [Steve Acho / Talio Cruz]
From the Vault … November 15, 2011
Here’s another guy I randomly stumbled across in my never ending search for awesome covers. He’s name is Steve Acho. He’s from Detroit. He plays piano. That’s all I know … But he does a heck of a lot of covers. And they’re really nifty.
Here he is covering Talio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” Listen to it, it’s that one annoying song you hear all the time but have no idea what it’s called, except not so annoying when Steve Acho sings it.
Sloop John B [Me First and The Gimmie Gimmies / Beach Boys]
It’s the first Friday of the month, and that means another … me First Friday! Yay![Runs around waving hands in the air like an excited Kermit the Frog]
Jolene [White Stripes / Dolly Parton]
Well hello Dolly!
Waterfalls [Bette Midler / TLC]
The divine Ms. M has anew album out today. I’m not a Midler fan, and actually are there any non-drag queens fans of hers? Anyway she covers the Hip-Hop classic as a piano ballad, in case anyone was expecting a death metal version or a polka.
Dancing Days [Stone Temple Pilots / Led Zeppelin]
From the Vault … April 18, 2011
Dancing Days are here again. This time covered by Stone Temple Pilots. I for one think Led Zeppelin would be proud of them if they were alive today. Wait they are? Huh …
I Put A Spell On You [Marilyn Manson / Screaming Jay Hawkins] CREEPY COVER
Man, I totally found this last November but somehow in spite of owning the Lost Highway soundtrack for a dozen years, it escaped my notice until jafter Halloween. This song just screams Halloween!
Because you scream on Halloween … get it?
Monster Mash [Hayseed Dixie / Bobby “Boris” Pickett] CREEPY COVER
You know the banjos give this a Deliverance type feel, which is appropriately scary for Halloween.
Thriller [Duwende / Michael Jackson] CREEPY COVER
When putting together a list of Halloween songs or Creepy Covers in this case, one is morally obligated to include Thriller. So acapella style here it is, complete with the Vincent Price part.
Friend of The Devil [ Counting Crows / Grateful Dead] CREEPY COVER
Reality is this is a great song for Halloween. It’s called “Friend of the DEVIL” its originally by the Grateful DEAD, and it’s being sung by a WHITE GUY WITH DREADLOCKS!
Zombie [The City Shakeup / Cranberries] CREEPY COVER
Before the Walking Dead, there was … the Cranberries!
Stay With Me [Ed Sheeran / Sam Smith]
Ed Sheeran always reminds me of like a younger, but homeless, Ron Howard.
Take Me Home Country Roads [Brandi Carlisle and EmmyLou Harris / John Denver]
I still get Brandi and Belinda Carlisle mixed up.
Simple Man [Rhett Walker / Lynyrd Skynyrd]
In order to cover such a southern soung, you pretty much have to be named Rhett.
I Knew You Were Trouble [We Came As Romans / Taylor Swift]
Huzzah for another Punk Goes Pop Album! We’re up to volume 6 and I hope they’ll keep cranking these beauties out until at least Volume 7.
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door [Guns And Roses / Bob Dylan] COVER TO COVER
Cover to Cover is the occasional feature here on undercoverwithcrut where I put back to back, two different covers of the same song so you can see just how different a song can be, covered. This week two takes on the Bob Dylan tune, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” On version is sung by a stringy haired, skirt and wrist band wearing, pompous whiny voiced cunt, the other is by Avril Lavigne. Hay-yoooo!
You Oughta Know [1000 Mona Lisas / Alanis Morissette]
From the vault … July 7, 2011
The year was 1995. My first memory of hearing a song and knowing it was a cover and thinking it was totally smothered in awesome sauce. Here’s 1000 Mona Lisas covering the song that founded the genre of music known as “Angry Cooter Music”, You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette
Angel of Harlem [The Wiggles / U2]
From the vault … April 11, 2010
I honestly expected this to suck, but … Uhm, well it’s U2 being covered by the Wiggles. With no tongue in cheek.
Eleanor Rigby [Letters From the Fire / Beatles]
Dear Match and Gasoline,
Having a lovely time here on vacation, wish you were here.
- Fire
God Only Knows [Dave Grohl, Alison Balsom, Lorde, Pharrell Williams, Zane Lowe, Sam Smith, Paloma Faith, Eliza Carthy, Nicola Benedetti, Chris Martin, Jaz Dhami, Martin James Bartlett, Danielle de Niese, Stevie Wonder, Florence Welch, Lauren Laverne, Brian Wilson, Jake Bugg, Katie Derham, Gareth Malone, Kylie Minogue, Chrissie Hynde, One Direction, Emeli Sandé, Elton John, Baaba Maal, Ethan Johns, Jools Holland, Jamie Cullum, Brian May, Tees Valley Youth Choir and BBC Concert Orchestra / Beach Boys]
As a cover lover, I just messed my pants … twice.
Rolling in the Deep [Aretha Franklin / Adele]
Somewhere Adele’s going “HOLY SHIT, I JUST GOT COVERED BY ARETHA FRANKLIN!”
I Want Candy [Bow Wow Wow / The Strangeloves] UNCOVERED
You know the New Wave version of the song by the shaved head hottie of Bow Wow Wow. What you don’t know is the UNCovered version (the original) by The Strangeloves circa 1965.
I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You [Moxy Fruvous / Bee Gees]
From the Vault … April 22, 2011
For most people born after 1978, the Bee Gees have been, and will always be the embodiment of Disco. What often over looked is they were, pre-disco a pretty tight vocal group. From those early days comes I’ve Gotta Get a Message To You covered here by Moxy Fruvous.
Isn’t She Lovely [Me First and The Gimmies / Stevie Wonder]
It’s the first friday of October, and that means it’s Me First Friday!
Pure Imagination [Primus / Gene Wilder]
So Primus is putting out a whole album of Willy Wonka covers. Because … Primus.
Bohemian Rhapsody [Panic! At The Disco / Queen]
I’m not a fan of Panic! At The Disco, but it’s better than Diarrhea at the Airport.
Whole Lotta Love [Michael Winslow / Led Zeppelin]
Hey remember that guy who made all those funny noises on Police Academy Movies? He also did the bleeps and the creeps in Spaceballs. Yeah … he covered Zep.
Paper Planes [Street Sweeper Social Club / M.I.A.]
From the vault … November 23, 2010
Is there some kind of secret contest between Tom Morello, Jack White and Dave Grohl to see who can be in the most bands at once? I mean it seems to me with every new issue of Rolling Stone at least one of them has a new band featured in it. I mean how long before one of them tries to form a band with Tyler Hanson? Anyway here’s Tom Morello’s latest band with Bootsy Riley called Street Sweeper Social Club covering M.I.A.’s Paper Planes.
Stairway to Heaven [Dolly Parton / Led Zeppelin]
From the Vault … July 29, 2011
I once had a friend who said that the only way Led Zepplin could be any better was if they had enormous boobs. He smoked a lot of pot. I mean like … a lot of pot. But anyway some times even the most random of dreams come true. So with that in mind, Hello Dolly!
Gangsta’s Paradise [Johnny Aloha / Coolio]
Apparently this gangsta’s paradise is an Hawaiian island.
Brown Eyed Girl [Everclear / Van Morrison]
"Hey this song is about meeeeeeee!" — Every drunk girl, with brown eyes, ever.
Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around [Puddle Of Mudd with BC Jean / Tom Petty with Stevie Nicks]
Someday Puddle of Mudd will be on an classic rock station. On that day “classic” will lose all meaning.
Lovers in a Dangerous Time [Barenaked Ladies / Bruce Cockburn]
From the vault … June 7, 2012
Bruce Cockburn’s “Lovers In A Dangerous Time” was ranked by CBC radio as the 11th greatest Canadian single of all time. This cover was also the first top 40 hit, all the way back in 1992, for Canadian band Barenaked Ladies. So if you get a slight maple taste listening to this track, that’s why.
Just What I Needed [Sister Hazel / Cars]
Suddenly I have the urge to shop at Circuit City.
Stay [30 Seconds to Mars / Rhianna]
I’m not sure anyones every actually listened to 30 Seconds To Mars. But most people still know it’s that band Jared Leto sings in, and he used to be a actor. And he’s still a pretty boy.
Psycho Killer [Moxy Fruvous / Talking Head]
From The Vault … August 19, 2011
The band Moxy Fruvous has been called the biggest independent band to come out of Canada since the Barenaked Ladies. That’s one of those things people say to sound impressive but no one actually knows what it means.
The band has also set back American geography by decades by preforming a song called “The Lowest Highest Point” which identifies Delaware as the state with the lowest highest point. As we all know, the state with the actual lowest highest point is Florida. Delaware has the lowest median elevation. This is why the United States can’t compete with China people! Canadians sabotaging our educational system.
So from the same live album as the “Lowest Highest Point,” here’s a Talking Heads cover.
Don’t Be Cruel [Cheap Trick / Elvis Presley]
From the vault … Jan. 12, 2011
What happens when the King of rock and roll gets covered by one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Cheap Trick? You get a mediocre cover that’s what! Rock on!
Mirrors [ Boyce Avenue featuring Fifth Harmony / Justin Timberlake ]
It was easy coming back to you … once I fingered an owl.
I’ll Stand By You [Rod Stewart / Pretenders]
Here’s a little known fact. Early in his career, Rod Stewart was considered quite attractive, and rarely if ever, mistaken for a muppet.
Teenage Dream [The Horrible Crowes / Katy Perry]
The lead singer of the Horrible Crowes kinda sounds like Joe Cocker. Kinda. The band as a whole sounds like a lesser version of the Black Crowes … oh, I get the name now.
Wild Horses [Alicia Keys and Adam Lavine / Rolling Stones] I LOVE COVERS
From the Vault … Feb. 14, 2011
Here’s Alicia Keys and Adam Levine (Of Kara’s Flowers fame?) covering the Rolling Stones, thus bringing “I Love Covers” week to a close.
To Love Somebody [Damien Rice and Ray Lamontange / Bee Gees]
From the Vault … August 20, 2011
Of all the Bee Gees songs, this is the most covered by far. To Love Somebody has been covered by everyone from Janis Joplin to Billy Corgan to Simply Red. Here’s one of the best covers of the song, IMHO, Damien Rice and Ray Lamontagne with a simply heart breakingly aching take on the song.
Crash (Into Me) [Stevie Nicks / Dave Matthews Band]
If you crash into me, you better have SafeAuto insurance.
Heart Shaped Box [Kiesza / Nirvana]
Semi-Known fact, “Heart Shaped Box” was Kurt Cobain’s personal slang for Courtney Love’s HooHa.
Best of You [Boyce Avenue / Foo Fighters]
I will forever associate this song with Danny Bonaduce. Because I was one of the three people to watch Breaking Bonaduce.
She Blinded Me With Science [ William Shatner / Thomas Dolby] CRAPPY COVER
Each and every day I scour the interwebs to find you my humble fans, cover songs. I get right down there in the bowels in the music industry, and just to prove it to you, here’s some crap from the bowels. It’s not quite the bottom of the barrel because as far as the bottom of the barrel goes, it’s low hanging fruit. My metaphors are so jumbled right now. I canna take much more of this captian. I’m giving her all she’s got!
Welcome to The Jungle [2Chellos / Guns and Roses]
From the vault … July 11, 2011
"I wanna hear you …. sreeeeeeeam!" No? Okay how about then an instrumental version of GNRby 2Chellos. You might have guessed 2Chellos is a group consisting of 2 guys playing chellos. Think Apocalyptica, but half the band.
I Love Rock N Roll [Joan Jett and the Blackhearts / Arrows] UNCOVERED
Joan Jett’s big break through and signature song was a cover. Don’t believe me? Here’s the UNCOVERED original version by the Arrows. You’d be surprised how often the break-through signature song is a cover.
Hard To Handle [Black Crowes / Otis Redding] UNCOVERED
You know Hard To Handle as the signature song of the Black Crowes. But have you ever heard it UNCOVERED? The original was written and recorded by Otis Redding. And no the words aren’t any easier to understand here.
That’s How Strong My Love Is [Seven Mary Three / O.V. Wright]
Like most Otis Redding songs, this isn’t an Otis Redding song. Originally recorded by O.V. Wright, this song has been covered a bajillion times. And here’s one more by Seven Mary Three, or 7 Mary 3. Side note, 7 Mary 3 was the call sign for Larry Wilcox on CHiPS.
This Magic Moment [Lou Reed / Jay and the Americans]
Wow I really need to go relisten to the whole “Lost Highway” soundtrack because it has a lot of cover songs I just totally missed. The original on this from the golden age of AM radio, when every musical group was named after a plural noun.
Bad Company [Five Finger Death Punch / Bad Company]
This is a pretty not terrible cover by Five Finger Death Punch. Now If I could only remember who did the original. I’m sure if I heard it I’d know.
NOW That’s what I call POLKA! [“Weird Al” Yankovic / Miley Cyrus; Foster the People; One Direction; Psy; Carly Rae Jepsen; Will.i.Am, Goyte; Pitbull, LMAFO, Mackelmore; Daft Punk]
For the record, “Weird Al” is not a cover artist, he does parodies, which aren’t covers. Except his polka medleys, which are covers.
Time After Time [Quiet Drive / Cyndi Lauper] COVER TO COVER
Cover to cover is two covers of the exact same song, back to back so you can compare the similarities and differences between the two. Highlighting exactly how different a song can be covered. This half of the Cover to Cover features the QuietDrive covering Cyndi Lauper.
Fireflies [Alex Goot / Owl City]
From the Vault … March 25, 2011
I still have no idea who Alex Goot is. But his mutli-track covers were he’s every instrument and voice on the song is the bomb shniggity. Here’s his cover of Owl City’s Fireflies. Score!
Blackhole Sun [Peter Frampton / Soundgarden]
From the Vault … November 26, 2010
Here’s Peter Frampton giving his take on the Soundgarden staple. Is it just me or does anyone else feel like “Frampton” must be yelled and never spoken?
Summer of ‘69 [Bowling For Soup / Bryan Adams]
Third of my Summer Covers, Bowling For Soup covering Bryan Adams. Fun Fact, Bryan Adams was four years old in the Summer of 69. Making this whole song kinda creepy, especially the line about “me and my baby in a 69.”
Justice For All My Lovin’ [Beatallica / Beatles & Metallica]
From the Vault … November 1, 2012
I could explain to you the concept of the band Beatallica, but if you can’t guess by the name of the band or the name of the track … leave now.
Head Like A Hole [Devo / Nine Inch Nails]
From the vault … November 21, 2011
There are a few things I’d like to avoid in my life. One of them is pissing off Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. Apparently this cover, did exactly that though. At least he thought better about starting an actual feud with Devo because that feud would have been more bizarre than that one Marshall Mathers had with a puppet.
Anyway from the SuperCop soundtrack, here’s Head Like A Hole, as covered by Devo.
We Are Going To Be Friends [Jack Johnson / White Stripes]
This cover was used on the soundtrack to the Curious George movie. The man with the yellow hat is so gullible. Don’t trust George, he takes advantage of you. Also I’m a Nigerian Prince.
Mysterious Ways [Snow Patrol/U2]
I used to think this song was about a magical orca. Shamu … in mysterious ways.
One Piece At A Time [Dan Bern / Johnny Cash]
Dan Bern is my secret man crush. Which means I guess it’s not a secret anymore.
Suspicious Minds [Fine Young Cannibals / Mark James]
I wonder what this guy’s speaking voice is like? You think it’s like that normally?
Ain’t No Sunshine [Hanson / Bill Withers]
You know, me from 1996 totally wants to kick me from 2014’s ass for posting anything by Hanson. But this cover is ..g… … go … goo … Not the worst thing in the world.
Dancing In The Dark [Tegan and Sara / Bruce Springsteen]
If old Brucifer was truly dancing in the dark, we never would have known he was dancing with Courtney Cox.
Brian Wilson [Brian Wilson / Barenaked Ladies]
From the vault … Nov., 13, 2010
Okay, let’s see if I can explain this in the most confusing way possible … It’s Brian Wilsoncovering Brian Wilson. Except he’s not singing a song he wrote, or even previously recorded, because that wouldn’t be a cover. He’s singing the Barenaked Ladies song, written about himself, the former Beach Boy, called Brian Wilson. I hope that at least slightly confused you, because if it didn’t I wasn’t doing my job.
Strange Fruit [UB40 / Billie Holiday]
This song was written by a communist about lynchings of black people. So it’s a happy song. Enjoy.
Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town [Cake / Johnny Darrell]
Mmmmm Cake.
Boom Boom [Big Head Todd and The Monsters / John Lee Hooker]
From the vault … March 19, 2011
I love Big Head Todd and the Monsters. They’ve got that jam band sound, without that holier than though mentality. Here they are covering John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom. Any one else hungry for Chili’s now?
Something I Can Never Have [Flyleaf / Nine Inch Nails]
From the vault … March 29, 2011
Some chick fronted Christian band covering Nine Inch Nails? Blasphemy! No wait, actually FlyLeaf does a pretty good job. Surprised me too.
Crazy For you [Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies / Madonna]
How did I miss that Me First and The Gimmies released a new album?!?I’m ashamed. So very ashamed. This punk supergroup is simply the best cover band out there today.BUY EVERYTHING THEY’VE EVER RECORDED!
Enter Sandman [Pat Boone / Metallica]
Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon’s fire
and of baked apple pie!
Life Is A Highway [Rascal Flatts / Tom Cochrane]
Cars was by far the worst Pixar movie. the plot was basically a rip of of Doc Hollywood. Remember that movie? No, well that’s how they got away with it. Micheal J Fox was in it? still no? okay. Well anyway this song was on the soundtrack to Cars.
Let It Go [Pearl Jam / Idina Menzel]
Well the Today show featured this … so … I guess I’m obligated too now.
The Beautiful Ones [My Brightest Diamond / Prince]
From the Vault … May 11, 2011
Back in the day when UnderCover with Crut was a real radio show (Okay, it was on an AM based on a college station but it was still real damnit), my boss man was known as the Shiv. He went on to work for a real radio station, WOXY. Long story short. I caught this little gem today via his FaceBook post. “My Brightest Diamond played live at WOXY in 2007 and did a cover of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” that damn near made me cry in the studio. We were never legally allowed to post it for download. Grab it before Prince’s legal team takes down [the] site!”
Radioactive [Steve Acho / Imagine Dragons]
In this version, I don’t hear him talking about it being enough to make his sister moan.
Lithium [Polyphonic Spree / Nirvana]
Polyphonic means many sounds. Spree means a crappy type of candy. Here’s the Heaven’s Gate cult cover Nirvana.
All I Wanna Do (Is Make Love To You) [Halestorm/Heart]
From the vault … August 28, 2012
Covering Heart is difficult. Those Wilson sisters are hard to match for sheer intensity, especially Ann Wilson’s boombastic vocals. However Halestorm has a go at it and flippin’ nails it vocally and adds some staying extra crunchy in milk guitars. Take that you silly rabbit.
Hey Soul Sister [Alex Goot / Train]
from the vault … March 2, 2011
Who the hell is Alex Goot? I have no idea. He looks like a 15 year old “Weird” Al Yankovic. But he’s got some great covers including this one of Train.
Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter [Autopilot Off / Herman’s Hermits]
Mrs. Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter, No please don’t call the cops. I swear I’m not a child molester! The van is for work! That’s why there are no windows!
Aerials [Rob Callon / System of a Down]
This dude like plays the skeleton of a cello or something. also the word “cello” is weird. I want there to be an ‘H” in there somewhere.
I Write The Songs [Diesel / Bruce Johnson]
I blog the songs that other people sing, I blog the songs that are special and things.
Impulsive [Poole / Wilson Phillips]
Do you ever do something impulsive, like hook a car battery up to your nipples with jumper cables? Me either, Just asking for a friend.
Single Ladies [Sara Bareilles / Beyonce]
If you like it, then you should have put a ring on it. Wedding ring, or vibrating cock ring. Depending on the gender of the person you like.
Bohemian Rhapsody [William Shatner / Queen]
From the Vault … November 19, 2011
Holy … Shatner! Can you believe that Kirk would cop to never having heard Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody before covering for his latest album. Shatner’s weird in that his music was so bad it became kitsch, then it became so kitsch it became good, and then it just started to go kitsch again. If that makes sense.
Hash Pipe [Thomas Jefferson and his Ragtime Orchestra / Weezer]
Apparently it’s 1930’s week here on UnderCover with Crut. This band is the forerunner to Postmodern Jukebox, on of my frequents here. So if you like PMJ, you’ll like this.
Walk Like An Egyptian [Puppini Sisters / Bangles]
This cover is kinda of a throw back, not a throw back to the days of the pyramids, but a throw back to the pin up era.
Boys Of Summer [Ataris / Don Henley]
Well Memorial Day has come and gone, and you know what that means, you’ve missed your best time to buy a matress this year. At leastuntil Columbus Day.
Born This Way [Alex Goot / Lady Gaga]
I have a great idea for a cover band, The name is “Lady Kaja-Gaga-Goo Goo Dolls.” we’ll draw on a variety of musical influences, but mainly we’ll play covers of Toad the Wet Sprocket. Yeah, I know, I’m kinda mental, but I was born this way.
I Won’t Give Up [Ahmir / Jason Mraz]
I won’t give up either, unless it involves a land war in asia.
Afternoon Delight [Wellington International Ukuele Orchestra / Starland Vocal Band]
If you don’t think this is the greatest song ever, I will fight you. That’s no lie.

Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? [Violent Femmes / Culture Club]
From The Vault … June 6, 2012
Last year I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they had their special “Women Who Rock” exhibit. It wasn’t bad I suppose, but they over looked some obvious choices … Like Alice Cooper, Marylin Manson, Twisted Sister, Catherine Wheel and Alice in Chains.
Also over looked, Violent Femmes. Here they are covering the Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?”
Take On Me [Reel Big Fish / A-Ha]
From the Vault … August 24, 2012
For a while A-ha was the biggest thing out of Scandinavia since ABBA. With that kick ass, early MTV hand drawn video, that even after 25 some years is still an awesome effect. The song was covered for the soundtrack to the entirely forgettable Matt Stone/Trey Parker movie BASEketball by Reel Big Fish.
One [Joe Cocker / U2]
One is the loneliest number, but U2 aren’t lonely.
Higher Ground [Playing For Change / Stevie Wonder]
There’s all these relatively obscure regional instruments, they very from country to country, 800 version of guitar like instruments. Now mash all these sounds you never hear together into one song in the name of promoting world peace. That’s this. And it’s the bomb! Wow, poor word choice.
You Belong To Me [Butch Walker / Taylor Swift]
No one gets my cover obsession like you do.
Almost Cut My Hair [Queensryche / Crosby, Stills Nash and Young]
I almost cut my hiar, but then I realized I had no one to manscape for.
Carry On My Wayward Son [Gwar / Kansas]
From the vault … March 13, 2013
OMG I think my head just exploded.
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) [Lumineers / Talking Heads]
For years I thought this song was called Native Melody. Boy, I was dumb.
Take Me Home Tonight [Every Avenue / Eddie Money]
This cover makes me happier than Eddie Money running a travel agency.
Wildflowers [Sara Darling / Tom Petty]
When your career is launched on a reality show hosted by Wayne Newton … yeah. I don’t know where I was going with that.
Seven Days [Cracker / Bob Dylan]
I can use the word “cracker” and because I’m white, it’s not racist.
Head Like A Hole [Honest Bob and the Factory to Dealer Incentives /Nine Inch Nails]
I’ll admit, I’m only blogging this song because I love the band name “Honest Bob and the Factory To Dealer Incentives.”
I Think I Love You [Less Than Jake / David Cassidy]
Dating advice, if a chick asks if you love her, the answer is always “yes,”
"I think I love you" is the same as a "no."
My Heart Will Go On [Los Straight Jackets / Celine Dion]
From the vault … November 10, 2010
((Rockabilly - Vocals) + Mexican Luchadore masks) x (Titanic - Celine Dion) = Los Straightjackets covering “My Heart Will Go On
See math is important. I saw these guys a couple months ago and let me tell you that they totally kicked ass.
Happy [BYU Vocal Point / Pharrell Williams]
I figured I better post a cover of this song before it reaches critical mass and no one can stand it anymore.
We’re Not Gonna Take It [Joan Jett / Twisted Sister]
We’re not going to take it! No, we ain’t gonna take it! We’re not going to take returns without receipts anymore! Not even for store credit!
The Freshman [Mustard Plug / Verve Pipe]
For the life of me, I cannot remember the combination to my luggage.
Real Love [Regina Spektor / Beatles]
I love covers of obscure songs, here’s Regina Spektor covering Real Love by Jodi Watley. No … Real Love by Slaughter? Mary J. Blige? Doobie Brothers? Bob Seger? Micheal McDonald?
… Shit, who did the original then? Beatles?!? Never heard of them.
Unbelievable [The Last Royals / EMF]
From the vault … May 17, 2011
Somehow EMF’s Unbeliveable as a cover, done here by The Last Royals, seems to lack something. Not that it’s a bad version it’s just missing … Andrew Dice Clay! I miss that man. He was so warm and kind. No? Who am I thinking of then? Oh yeah, Buddy Hackett.
Sexual Healing [Soul Asylum / Marvin Gaye]
Despite rumors to the contrary, sexual healing is not about a herpes medication.
Jeremy [ Boyce Avenue / Pearl Jam]
The version is totally different that the original … mainly because you can understand the words and don’t wind up singing “Sara Lee Smoked Hams” or “Jeremy smoked grass today.”
But hey, if you like misheard lyrics, follow theladymondegreen.
Hey Ya! [The Blanks / Outkast]
Old white dudes covering Outkast! Hey wait, is this the house band from Scrubs?
Nothing Else Matters [Scala and Kolacny Brothers / Metallica]
You may have caught this track at the end of the Pilot for the NBC show “Crisis” if not, you’re likely watching good television instead.
Cat’s In The Cradle [Ugly Kid Joe / Harry Chapin]
From the vault … Feb. 17, 2011
Wanna make a single dad feel like crap? Play him Harry Chapin! Wanna make him feel really bad, play the Ugly Kid Joe version. Cause it’s kinda terrible in comparison.
All The Young Dudes [World Party / Mott the Hoople]
All The Young Dudes was written by David Bowie, but first recorded by Mott the Hoople. I believe he made apple sauce in his spare time. This particular cover comes from the soundtrack to the movie Clueless. I know the title might suggest it, but the movie was not about congress.
Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning) [Gary Allen / Vertical Horizon]
Obviously this song has deep, deep meaning because he’s playing the guitar in the middle of a lake.
Yesterday [En Vouge / Beatles]
I’ll admit, not a fan of this cover, Yesterday is such a powerful song and En Vouge just seems to rob it of all power by making it mid 90’s R&B tripe.
Hungry Like The Wolf [Reel Big Fish / Duran Duran]
Are you hungry like the wolf? Here have a Snickers bar, you’re just not yourself when you’re hungry.
Everlong [Bronson Arroyo featuring Stephen King / Foo Fighters]
If the name Bronson Arroyo sounds only vaguely familiar to you, might I take a moment to remind you that he’s a MLB pitcher, He’s starting this year with the Diamondbacks, after a lengthy stay with the Reds. This cover however comes from his days playing in Boston. You might remember him from being the set up man in Curt Shilling’s bloody sock game, or A-Rod slapping his glove to avoid being tagged out.
Anyway if an MLB player being a rocker sounds like a plot point in a Stephen King movie you’re in luck. Stephen King for some unknown reason has some guest vocals on this track.
Happy Opening day ya’ll!
Common People [William Shatner / Pulp]
From the vault … July 5th, 2011
Are you sure you want to listen to a cover of common people / you want to hear Shatner, common people sing / you want to cover Pulp’s common people
Some people give Shatner shit for his terrible singing, but I for one think this song is the bomb, and not just because of the Ben Folds musical arrangements.
Happy [Penatonix / Pharrell Williams]
Pentatonix is made up of the tall white dude, the hot redhead, the black guy, the jew with the deep voice and the rest here on Gilligan’s Island!
Land of 1,00 Dances [The Wrestlers / Wilson Pickett] CRAPPY COVER
From the vault … Feb. 23, 2011
For every good cover, there are 100 that suck, or in today’s case 1000. I feel it’s by job … nay my duty to bring you some of these CRAPPY COVERs from time to time because in the words of the great American philosophers Beavis and Butthead, “If it didn’t have a part that sucked, then it’s like, the other part wouldn’t be as cool.” So in what can only be described as a true taste of 1985, here’s the Wrestlers of the WWF (now WWE) covering Wilson Pickett’s Land of 1000 Dances. Mr. Pickett is no doubt spinning in his grave. I don’t even know for sure that he’s dead, but I stand by my statement either way.
Sadly Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant weren’t involved in this song. It’s actually kind of surprising in a few ways …
1) The Mouth of The South, Jimmy Hart can actually sing.
2) I can name all but one of the wrestlers, 90% of the ones that are still alive are still making a living wrestling. The notable exception is Jessie Ventura.
3) Yes, that is MeatLoaf on drums … who knew he could play drums? Obviously Cyndi Lauper was much more successful with her Rock and Wrestling Connection perhaps because she was smart enough to hide behind a wig and glasses for this video.
4) Where the hell’s the Honky Tonk Man? I mean … com’on, this was made for him! (He actually made his debut in 1986, but still …)
Party In The U.S.A. [Reid and the Riot Act / Miley Cyrus]
From the Vault … Nov. 10, 2010
If you’re like me the only exposure you’ve had to Ms. Cyrus has been as the voice of Penny in the Disney animated film Bolt. Not a Disney classic by any stretch of the imagination, but one of the more tolerable films my kids can watch on repeat for weeks on end.
Outside of that my exposure to her has been simply the semi-ubiquitous “Party in the U.S.A.” Okay confession time. For some strange reason I actually like this song. I know, I know, she’s an underage white country girl with a smile like a jack-o-lantern name checking Jay-Z. The “story” of the song is total teen girl power trite. The lyrics aren’t particularly clever but let’s face it, compared to LFO it’s f*ckin’ Shakespere. Hell, compared to Billy Ray it’s f*ckin’ Shakespere. But it’s catchy, it’s got a good hook, the beat is good. You know everything she had no say in and her producers/song writers did.
So, uhm anyway, after the dark mood of the Halloween Cover Countdown, I figured something light like a cover of a pop tart would be in order. Can I call her a pop tart or is that weird? I know she turns eighteen this month but ….? WIKIPEDIA!!! That’s how I know, damn it! Anyway here’s a band called “Reid and the Riot Act.”
Download it for free.
Hackensack [ Katy Perry / Fountains Of Wayne]
I think what bothers me the most about Katy Perry is it was months before I realized she wasn’t a character in a SNL sketch played by Zooey Deschanel.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World [Lorde / Tears For Fears]
Gone Daddy Gone [Gnarls Barkley / Violent Femmes]
From the Vault … October 22, 2010
Gnarls Barkey took their version of Gone Daddy Gone to #35 on the charts. Something the college rock band Violent Femmes never dreamed of in 1982 when they released the song. Then again there aren’t many songs with xylophone solos that chart, let alone two xylophone solos.
Crazy [Violent Femmes / Gnarls Barkley]
From the Vault … October 21, 2010
There’s been a number of songs called “Crazy.” Patsy Cline did one. Seal did one. However in early 2006 there was one “Crazy,” and it was everywhere. You simply couldn’t escape Gnarls Barkley. This however, isn’t that song. Not exactly anyway.
Violent Femmes released a cover of the song on June 24, 2008. It was their first newly recorded song since 2000, which wasn’t entirely new anyway, just a redone version of “Blister in the Sun” called “Blister 2000” for the Grosse Point Blank soundtrack. Take it as a musical nod to Gnarls Barkley for their cover over the Violent Femmes song “Gone Daddy Gone.”
Hmmm … that gives me and idea for the next post!
Teenage Dream [The Rescues / Katy Perry]
Dirty Diana [The Weekend / Micheal Jackson]
Careless Whisper [Postmodern Jukebox / George Michael]
Postmodern Jukebox is fucking brilliant. I don’t know what else to say.
Since U Been Gone [A Day To Remember / Kelly Clarkson]
Need You Now [Sparks The Rescue / Lady Antebellum]
Under Pressure [Joss Stone / Queen]
Back To Black [Beyonce and Andre 3000 / Amy Winehouse]
Andre 3000 sounds so futuristic, like a character on Futurama.
Have You Ever Seen The Rain? [Spin Doctors / Creedence Clearwater Revival]
From the vault … March 10, 2011
I wanna know, have you seen the Spin Doctors since 1995? Me either. Here they are though covering CCR.
Pure Imagination [Fiona Apple / Gene Wilder]
Dance Hall Days [Okkervil River / Wang Chung]
No, I’m sorry I can’t tonight. Does tomorrow afternoon work for everyone to Wang Chung?
Mother [Natalie Maines with Ben Harper / Pink Floyd]
Here’s the least attractive of the Dixie Chicks covering the least attractive of the Floyds.
Umbrella [Plain White T’s / Rhianna]
From the Vault … December 9, 2010
If you’re like the rest of America, you’re sick of hearing Rhianna sing Umbrella. It’s a good thing this ain’t Rhianna then, it’s the Plain White T’s!
Careless Whisper [Seether / George Michael]
From the vault … January 11. 2011
"Careless Whisper" was George Michael’s first post Wham! song, although it was go written by that other guy, from Wham! You know the blond guy … what was his name … Alex Winter? This cover is by Seether and according to a review for Billboard, said, “the song is a mostly faithful take on the original, with guitars subbing for the saxophone intro before greeting a Staind-meets-Nickelback grunge dynamic. Younger rock fans who don’t know George Michael from Boy George will love the song”.
Rocket Man [ William Shatner / Elton John] CRAPPY COVER
Man, this is what the CRAPPY COVER hashtag was made for!
I Can’t Go For That [The Bird and the Bee / Hall and Oates]
Apparently “The Bird and the Bee” put out an entire album of Hall and Oates covers. I’m not sure if that’s brilliant or stupid.
Swinging Party [Lorde / Replacements]
Yeah, Lorde is a Swinger baby. Grrr! Yeah! What’s the Austin Power’s emoticon again?
Get Out of My Dreams (Get Into My Car) [Fenix TX / Billy Ocean]
From The Vault April 19, 2011
Oh Billy, after the Indian and the Pacific, you’re my favorite Ocean.
From the “NASCAR on Fox” Soundtrack … Huh? … here’s Fenix TX covering Get Out Of My Dreams (Get Into My Car).
I Won’t Give Up [ Alex G feat. Tyler Ward / Jason Mraz]
I have a feeling that Alex G goes by Alex G because she gets confused with Alex Goot, since they’re both YouTube cover artists. Just my hunch though.
Whip It [Powerman 5000 / Devo]
What Makes You Beautiful [The 1975 / One Direction]
Viva Los Vegas [Dead Kennedys / Elvis Prestley] PRESIDENTIAL COVERS
From the Vault … Feb 19th, 2011
Nothing says Presidential like an Elvis cover … no … what if it was by the Dead Kennedys? Viva Viagra!
Rocket Man [Nixons / Elton John] PRESIDENTAL COVERS
From the Vault … Feb. 20, 2011
Here’s a flash back. Obscure 90’s band, The Nixons, covering the Elton John classic Rocket Man. Yeah, I know it’s a stretch to call The Nixons presidential … wait … Nixon really was a president? It’s not just something they made up for Futurama? Who’d of thunk it?
In The End [Us / Linkin Park] PRESIDENTIAL COVERS
Well Monday is presidents’ day here in the USA. So in honor the next few days are all presidential covers. Like this cover of Linkin Park … because Lincoln was a president, get it? I know I know flimsy concept. It’s my blog I do what I want.
Fell In Love With A Boy [Joss Stone / White Stripes] I LOVE COVERS
Romeo And Juliet [Brown Derbies / Dire Straights ] I LOVE COVERS
From the vault … Feb. 11th, 2011
I love the Brown Derbies. They’ve done some of the best college acapella covers ever, in my book. Unfortunately they’re very few on YouTube. So, while not thier best love song, here they are covering the Dire Straights’ Romeo and Juliet.
