Call Me Maybe, Boyfriend, Ahmir, carly rae jepsen, Justin Beiber, Cover Song

Call Me Maybe & Boyfriend [Ahmir / Carly Rae Jepsen & Justin Bieber]

From the Vault … August 14, 2012

I’m a lyrics guy. I love lyrics. It’s amazing to me when someone can take a trashy pop song, cover it in an entirely different music style, and turn it into something wonderful. That’s what Ahmir does here with not one, but two Top 40 songs. They turn “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Boyfriend” by Justina Bieber into a slow Boyz II Men style, sweet love making, slow jam.

Rumor Has It, Ahmir, Adele, Heard it through the grapevine, CCr, Cover, coversong

Rumor Has It [Ahmir / Adele ] I (heart) this group. Ahmir just does the throw back motown vibe so well, but then to cover a song that sounds like a throw back and mash it with Grapevine. Why that’s just awesomesauce.

Airplanes [Ahmir / BoB]

One of my joys with UnderCover with Crut (The Cover Song Blog) is that every next big act uses the cover song as a stepping stone to bigger things ... the tribute album in particular. I was turned into bands like Blink 182 and Dashboard Confessional years before most were (both those bands were on the 1997 Before You Were Punk album).

Anyway three years ago I posted a cover by a band I totally stumbled into on YouTube. The band is called Ahmir and tonight they get their big break on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon performing an original song. I can't help but be a wee bit proud.

Before they do though, here's my last chance to claim them as my discovery, as they cover B.o.B's Airplanes.

Just The Way You Are [Pierce the Veil; Boyce Avenue; Jimi D; Ahmir; Megan Nicole, Alex Goot / Bruno Mars]

Just the Way you are seems to be the current "it" song to cover. Don't believe me? Here's a smattering. Mainly because I don't get to use the word "smattering" enough. Also "jinkies" ... can't remember the last time I used that in casual conversation.

For the protopunks, here's Pierce the veil's take ...

If you wanna rock down to the light accoustic Boyce Avenue ...

Ya mon, there's a reggae cover too by Jimi D ...

Need an R&B version, Ahmir has provided ...

What about a female vocal version? Here's Megan Nicole.

What about another version? Alex Goot is a hoot.

Nothin' On You + Hey Soul Sister

Is it a cover? Is it a mash-up? Back when I was a kid we just called them medleys but these kids today don't do nothing like we did them when I was a kid.

Here's Sam Tsui and Ahmir covering/mashing-up/medlying BoB's Nothing on You and Train's Hey Soul Sister. And it's freaking amazing!

Firework

I worry about Katy Perry. She has projectiles from her mommy melons way too often. Perhaps if she heard this R&B take on Firework by Ahmir she'd call down a bit and stop shooting things from her nipples. Then again maybe not.

Need You Now

Okay, I'll admit that I'm not a fan of country pop. But some how I like this Lady Antebellum song. I love however this soulful R&B take by Ahmir of "I Need You Now." It makes me feel kinda funny, like when I used to climb the rope in gym class.

Fireflies

I went searching the interwebs for a punk cover of a Lady Antebellum I had heard of. This is of course how I wound up with an R&B cover of Owl City the sounds like it was used in the concourse area of the Epcot Center's "The Land" attraction. You know the one with all the hydroponic gardens and the singing food cabaret thing? Too obscure?

Pushing forward, to be honest, I know nothing about Ahmir, other than they bill themselves as YouTube's most popular R&B band. I'm not sure what criteria they used to reach that conclusion ... it's like being the self proclaimed most handsome guy in chess club. They've got this cool pre-grunge Color Me Badd type vibe to them. I meant that as a compliment. No really, I swear. Their musical song book consists of covers of BeyonceTrain, Justin BeiberEminem and Miley Cyrus. Diversity at it's finest.
