I Wanna Know What Love Is [ Mariah Carey / Foreigner ]
I really want to hate Mariah. But truth is she can really sing and also BOOBIEZ!
Need You Now [ Ahmir / Lady Antebellum ]
From the Vault … April 15, 2011
Okay, I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of country pop. But some how I like this Lady Antebellum song. I love however this soulful R&B take by Ahmir of “I Need You Now.” It makes me feel kinda funny, like when I used to climb the rope in gym class.
Fairytale Of New York [ No Use For A Name / Pogues with Kristy McCall] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
In England, “Fairytale of New York” is as popular as “White Christmas” is here in the state. Blimey, that’s a right jolly old puzzle, now ain’t it? I’d wager a farthing it’s because of ye olde bangers and mash.
Merry Christmas Baby [ Southern Culture on the Skids / Three Blazers] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
From the Vault … December 24, 2012
This is one of my favorite Christmas song, cover or not. Although the fact it’s a cover certainly helps things. Covering the Three Blazers 1947 song, here’s Southern Culture On The Skids (Or SCOTS for those hip) camel walking a kick ass cover of Merry Christmas Baby.
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus [ Amy Winehouse / Jimmy Boyd ] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
From The Vault … December 24, 2011
Well in the 12 Days of covers, we’ve dealt with heart break (Last Christmas / Christmas Please Come Home), Date Rape (Baby it’s Cold Outside), and worst of all Billy Squire (Christmas is the Time To Say I Love You) so why stop now? Let’s bring out marital infidelity! Here’s Amy Winehouse covering Jimmy Boyd’s I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.
Rocking Around The Christmas Tree [ All For Nothing / Brenda Lee ]
You know for a song with “Rocking” in the title, the original version doesn’t really rock though. Except for the part where she’s talking about having “some fucking pie.”
Pure Imagination & White Christmas [Blenders / Gene Wilder & Irving Berlin] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
From the Vault … December 18, 2010
"Pure Imagination" was sung in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by Gene Wilder. A Jewish Irving Berlin penned “White Christmas” for Bing Crosby only to have it become the number one selling single of all time. Here acapella group the Blenders … uh … blend the two into what is easily my favorite Christmas Cover.
The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) [ Lost Dogs / Chipmunks ] 12 DAYS OF COVERS
From the Vault … December 19th, 2010
The Lost Dogs are a Christian Rock supergroup consisting of … snore!!! Who cares, odds are if you listen to Christian Rock, you aren’t reading this. And they’re covering the Chipmunks for cripes sake!
Love Her Madly [ Bo Diddley / Doors]
Bo apparently does know Diddley about the Doors. Remember those commercials with Bo Jackson? And they said Bo didn’t know diddley? Yeah, those were awesome.
I Walk the Line [ Live / Johnny Cash ]
From the Vault … July 18, 2012
Back in the day there was a big stink raised because Chris Daughtry wasn’t original enough when he preformed Johnny Cash’s “Walk The Line” on American Idol. What was the fuss? He covered the song in a fashion similar to Live. Really? Calling an American Idol unoriginal is like complaining there’s too much bread in your toast. Anyway here is Live’s take on the track.
Bizarre Love Triangle [ Frente! / New Order]
According to wikipedia, Frente! was named after the Spanish word for forehead. Which for some reason makes me like them that much more.
This Is How You Remind Me [ PostModern Jukebox / Nickelback]
If the fact this song comes from an album called “A Motown Tribute to Nickelback” isn’t enough to make you want to watch this video … then watch it for the tambourine player. Best … tambourine player … ever.
Message In A Bottle [Matisyahu / Police] 8 COVERED NIGHTS
From the Vault … Dec. 2, 2010
Matisyahu if you haven’t heard of him, is an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician. No really, he is. And he’s actually pretty good and has even had a Top 40 hit. Here’s Matisyahu is covering the Police’s “Message in A Bottle” for the 6th of the 8 Covered Nights.
