Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? [Violent Femmes / Culture Club]
From The Vault … June 6, 2012
Last year I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they had their special “Women Who Rock” exhibit. It wasn’t bad I suppose, but they over looked some obvious choices … Like Alice Cooper, Marylin Manson, Twisted Sister, Catherine Wheel and Alice in Chains.
Also over looked, Violent Femmes. Here they are covering the Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?”
Take On Me [Reel Big Fish / A-Ha]
From the Vault … August 24, 2012
For a while A-ha was the biggest thing out of Scandinavia since ABBA. With that kick ass, early MTV hand drawn video, that even after 25 some years is still an awesome effect. The song was covered for the soundtrack to the entirely forgettable Matt Stone/Trey Parker movie BASEketball by Reel Big Fish.
One [Joe Cocker / U2]
One is the loneliest number, but U2 aren’t lonely.
Higher Ground [Playing For Change / Stevie Wonder]
There’s all these relatively obscure regional instruments, they very from country to country, 800 version of guitar like instruments. Now mash all these sounds you never hear together into one song in the name of promoting world peace. That’s this. And it’s the bomb! Wow, poor word choice.
You Belong To Me [Butch Walker / Taylor Swift]
No one gets my cover obsession like you do.
Almost Cut My Hair [Queensryche / Crosby, Stills Nash and Young]
I almost cut my hiar, but then I realized I had no one to manscape for.
Carry On My Wayward Son [Gwar / Kansas]
From the vault … March 13, 2013
OMG I think my head just exploded.
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) [Lumineers / Talking Heads]
For years I thought this song was called Native Melody. Boy, I was dumb.
Take Me Home Tonight [Every Avenue / Eddie Money]
This cover makes me happier than Eddie Money running a travel agency.
Wildflowers [Sara Darling / Tom Petty]
When your career is launched on a reality show hosted by Wayne Newton … yeah. I don’t know where I was going with that.
Seven Days [Cracker / Bob Dylan]
I can use the word “cracker” and because I’m white, it’s not racist.
Head Like A Hole [Honest Bob and the Factory to Dealer Incentives /Nine Inch Nails]
I’ll admit, I’m only blogging this song because I love the band name “Honest Bob and the Factory To Dealer Incentives.”
I Think I Love You [Less Than Jake / David Cassidy]
Dating advice, if a chick asks if you love her, the answer is always “yes,”
"I think I love you" is the same as a "no."
My Heart Will Go On [Los Straight Jackets / Celine Dion]
From the vault … November 10, 2010
((Rockabilly - Vocals) + Mexican Luchadore masks) x (Titanic - Celine Dion) = Los Straightjackets covering “My Heart Will Go On
See math is important. I saw these guys a couple months ago and let me tell you that they totally kicked ass.
Happy [BYU Vocal Point / Pharrell Williams]
I figured I better post a cover of this song before it reaches critical mass and no one can stand it anymore.
We’re Not Gonna Take It [Joan Jett / Twisted Sister]
We’re not going to take it! No, we ain’t gonna take it! We’re not going to take returns without receipts anymore! Not even for store credit!
The Freshman [Mustard Plug / Verve Pipe]
For the life of me, I cannot remember the combination to my luggage.
Real Love [Regina Spektor / Beatles]
I love covers of obscure songs, here’s Regina Spektor covering Real Love by Jodi Watley. No … Real Love by Slaughter? Mary J. Blige? Doobie Brothers? Bob Seger? Micheal McDonald?
… Shit, who did the original then? Beatles?!? Never heard of them.
Unbelievable [The Last Royals / EMF]
From the vault … May 17, 2011
Somehow EMF’s Unbeliveable as a cover, done here by The Last Royals, seems to lack something. Not that it’s a bad version it’s just missing … Andrew Dice Clay! I miss that man. He was so warm and kind. No? Who am I thinking of then? Oh yeah, Buddy Hackett.
Sexual Healing [Soul Asylum / Marvin Gaye]
Despite rumors to the contrary, sexual healing is not about a herpes medication.
Jeremy [ Boyce Avenue / Pearl Jam]
The version is totally different that the original … mainly because you can understand the words and don’t wind up singing “Sara Lee Smoked Hams” or “Jeremy smoked grass today.”
But hey, if you like misheard lyrics, follow theladymondegreen.
Hey Ya! [The Blanks / Outkast]
Old white dudes covering Outkast! Hey wait, is this the house band from Scrubs?
Nothing Else Matters [Scala and Kolacny Brothers / Metallica]
You may have caught this track at the end of the Pilot for the NBC show “Crisis” if not, you’re likely watching good television instead.
Cat’s In The Cradle [Ugly Kid Joe / Harry Chapin]
From the vault … Feb. 17, 2011
Wanna make a single dad feel like crap? Play him Harry Chapin! Wanna make him feel really bad, play the Ugly Kid Joe version. Cause it’s kinda terrible in comparison.
All The Young Dudes [World Party / Mott the Hoople]
All The Young Dudes was written by David Bowie, but first recorded by Mott the Hoople. I believe he made apple sauce in his spare time. This particular cover comes from the soundtrack to the movie Clueless. I know the title might suggest it, but the movie was not about congress.
