Rocket Man [ William Shatner / Elton John] CRAPPY COVER
Man, this is what the CRAPPY COVER hashtag was made for!
I Can’t Go For That [The Bird and the Bee / Hall and Oates]
Apparently “The Bird and the Bee” put out an entire album of Hall and Oates covers. I’m not sure if that’s brilliant or stupid.
Swinging Party [Lorde / Replacements]
Yeah, Lorde is a Swinger baby. Grrr! Yeah! What’s the Austin Power’s emoticon again?
Get Out of My Dreams (Get Into My Car) [Fenix TX / Billy Ocean]
From The Vault April 19, 2011
Oh Billy, after the Indian and the Pacific, you’re my favorite Ocean.
From the “NASCAR on Fox” Soundtrack … Huh? … here’s Fenix TX covering Get Out Of My Dreams (Get Into My Car).
I Won’t Give Up [ Alex G feat. Tyler Ward / Jason Mraz]
I have a feeling that Alex G goes by Alex G because she gets confused with Alex Goot, since they’re both YouTube cover artists. Just my hunch though.
Whip It [Powerman 5000 / Devo]
What Makes You Beautiful [The 1975 / One Direction]
Viva Los Vegas [Dead Kennedys / Elvis Prestley] PRESIDENTIAL COVERS
From the Vault … Feb 19th, 2011
Nothing says Presidential like an Elvis cover … no … what if it was by the Dead Kennedys? Viva Viagra!
Rocket Man [Nixons / Elton John] PRESIDENTAL COVERS
From the Vault … Feb. 20, 2011
Here’s a flash back. Obscure 90’s band, The Nixons, covering the Elton John classic Rocket Man. Yeah, I know it’s a stretch to call The Nixons presidential … wait … Nixon really was a president? It’s not just something they made up for Futurama? Who’d of thunk it?
In The End [Us / Linkin Park] PRESIDENTIAL COVERS
Well Monday is presidents’ day here in the USA. So in honor the next few days are all presidential covers. Like this cover of Linkin Park … because Lincoln was a president, get it? I know I know flimsy concept. It’s my blog I do what I want.
Fell In Love With A Boy [Joss Stone / White Stripes] I LOVE COVERS
Romeo And Juliet [Brown Derbies / Dire Straights ] I LOVE COVERS
From the vault … Feb. 11th, 2011
I love the Brown Derbies. They’ve done some of the best college acapella covers ever, in my book. Unfortunately they’re very few on YouTube. So, while not thier best love song, here they are covering the Dire Straights’ Romeo and Juliet.
Close To You [Cranberries / Richard Chamberlain] I LOVE COVERS
From the Vault … Feb. 8th 2011
Hey it’s time for another theme week thingy in honor of the Hallmark Holiday we call Valentine’s Day, or VD as I like to call it. So for the next week-ish, covers with the theme of Love, because “I Love Covers!” Also I had a request a while ago for covers for a wedding playlist.
So kicking of the week of Amore, here’s Close to You as done by the Cranberries from the “If I Were A Carpenter” tribute album to … well the Carpenters. You might remember this album was an important plot point in the movie Juno. I for one liked that movie save one very important point. I understand Jennifer Garner is supposed to be attractive and all, but I feel she has a smile like a Velociraptor and I can’t stand to look at her.
But wait there’s more! The song wasn’t originally by the Carpenters! It was written by the legendary Burt Bacharach and first recorded by Richard Chamberlain! Bet you didn’t know that!
I Need Love [Luka Bloom / LL Cool J] I LOVE COVERS
Back before he was an actor, LL Cool J used to record music. I bet you didn’t know that,
To Love Somebody [Janis Joplin / Bee Gees] I LOVE COVERS
If you only know the Bee Gees for disco, you’re missing out on one of the great vocal bands of all time. That whole disco thing, yeah just a sell out.
Seasons In The Sun [Nirvana / Terry Jacks]
Kurt Cobain often mentioned this song in interviews saying it made him cry. What a big baby.
Faith [ Limp Bizkit / Wham!]
She rocked out to Wham, not a big Limp Bizkit fan.
Boys Don’t Cry [Grant Lee Phillips / Cure]
From The Vault … Jan 25th, 2013
Here’s former lead singer of Grant Lee Buffalo, Grant Lee Phillips covering the Cure song, “Boys Don’t Cry.” If I’m not mistaken is meant to be ironic, because it’s a sad sonbg, and it’d totally make sense if he was crying. Although it’d totally make him a girl if he did. So title stands correct as is.
I Can’t Help Fallin’ In Love With You [UB40 / Elvis Presley]
From the vault … Nov. 9th, 2010
One of the most succesful reggae bands of all time, the group UB40, is barely known here in the states, save the sparse charting cover song spead out over three decades. Despite a vast musical catalog, all three of their U.K. number one hits and four of their five U.S. top ten hits were cover songs.
However UB40 does have a unique place in the annals of music history. UB40’s cover of “I Can’t Help Fallin’ In Love With You” is the only cover to chart higher than the Elvis version. Also worth noting is they have the most soulful sounding ginger for a lead singer outside of Rick Astley.
And now you know the rest of the story.
